LOCAL VNA HELPS PROTECT AGAINST CERVICAL CANCER

[Ft. Myers, FL] – [01/07/10] – January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and VNA is now providing Gardasil for females aged 19 to 26.

According to the CDC, there are approximately 11,000 new cases of cervical cancer and 4,000 deaths attributed to cervical cancer each year in the United States. Human papillomavirus or HPV is the main cause of cervical cancer in women.

In addition to cervical cancer and other less common cancers, HPV is also responsible for other health problems including genital warts.  Gardasil, a CDC-recommended vaccine, protects against cervical cancer and genital warts.  Gardasil was also recently approved by the FDA for use in boys and young for the prevention of genital warts caused by HPV.

“Because HPV is easily spread and often has no symptoms, prevention is very important.” stated Barbara Fernandez, Special Programs Director for VNA.   “As a local, non-profit agency that is committed to the well-being of this community, we are proud to assist in prevention efforts.”

Payment assistance is available through Merck’s Patient Assistance Program for those who qualify.
